In Ukrainian, the word for wedding, vesillya/весілля, and for cheerful or jolly, veseley/веселий, are closely related. It's no wonder that Ukrainian weddings are known for fun and excitement. Ukrainians make great use of this joyful time with numerous traditions, some dating back millenia.
There is a saying that for every Ukrainian baba there is a recipe for borshch. The same goes for Ukrainian wedding traditions. There are variations from family to family, village to village, oblast to oblast and across regions. I have incorporated several of them into this section on Ukrainian Wedding Traditions.
